GMK Specialty Foods is an Italian specialty food distributor in Howell, New Jersey.
We supply the restaurants, pizzerias, Italian markets and supermarkets of the Jersey Shore, from Atlantic Highlands down to Long Beach Island and inland to Freehold. Fresh mozzarella, burrata and ricotta made in New Jersey; prosciutto and salumi; Parmigiano and Pecorino; Oro Giallo pasta; Italian tomatoes and olive oil.
The thing that makes this business work is unglamorous: we run our own refrigerated trucks. Fresh mozzarella is made in the morning and is at its best that day. It cannot be shipped in a box. It has to be driven, cold, by someone who is going that way anyway — which is exactly what we do every week.
That’s also why we’re adding home delivery. The same truck that stops at a pizzeria in Freehold on a Tuesday can stop at a house in Howell on the way. There is no one else in this county doing that, because retailers don’t own trucks and truckers don’t sell cheese.
Home delivery on our existing routes, now running. We’re holding the numbers down for the first few weeks while we get the routine right — the packing, the cold chain, the temperature records. Some weeks will sell out while we do. People on our list hear first when the next one opens.
